MICHAEL’S TOOLKIT

2021 • PHOTOGRPAHY

When I started working in the creative industry as a graphic designer I was sorely aware of how few Black designers there were. Navigating the industry without many connections or the ‘industry know how’ added some speed bumps along that journey. Once I ‘got in the door’ I learnt that merit and skill were not enough. The game to play was more about being loud and proud about your work as that was the only way some would see your efforts. Something foreign to those who may feel the need to be more ‘humble’ in order to not appear too loud or too proud.

This editorial serves as a means of advocating for myself but also serves as a form of documentation, that I was here and that many of us are here in this space.
